CAWP 2012 Open House - You're Invited!

On Wednesday February 1st the Centre for Advanced Wood Processing will be holding its 2012 Open House. We invite anyone who is interested to visit our building, see our facilities, find out what services we have to offer, and take in a variety of free presentations and demonstrations.

The Wood Manufacturing Council is pleased to present Going Global— International Trade Research & Marketing - a hands-on workshop that gives entrepreneurs, executives and managers in the advanced wood-manufacturing sector the information they need to compete in the global marketplace and capitalize on a world of opportunity. Going Global is a brand new series of practical, upbeat sessions designed specifically for players in the advanced wood-manufacturing sector looking to compete in the global marketplace where demand for Canadian products is high. The workshop is based on the internationally acclaimed Forum for International Trade Training seminar series, and has been customized with statistics, case studies and market intelligence for the wood products manufacturing industry. The workshop will help participants identify research and evaluate the export markets that are best for their products. 1.30pm: Welcome and Introductions
1.40pm: Imagining, Designing and Building New Furniture: From Concept to Creation
Judson Beaumont, founder of Straight Line Designs, describes how he maintains his prolific pace of highly-original furniture designs and architectural millwork installations. He will discuss the creative process and how his company translates new ideas into the completed works that Straight Line supplies to clients ranging from local consumers to YVR Airport, Disney Cruise Lines, ING Direct, and Princeton University.
2.30pm: Supporting Human Resources Development for the Woodworking Industries
Stephen Kennedy, Project Manager with the Wood Manufacturing Council, introduces the many tools that WMC has developed to help wood products companies select, hire, train, manage and develop a competitive workforce.
2.55pm: Learning from Europe: Low Energy Building Technology
Fresh from leading a tour of innovative building products manufacturers in Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany, UBC Senior Instructor Robert Fuerst describes leading-edge European building practices that have the potential for adaptation and application in the Canadian market. UBC Wood Products Processing student Kell Hansen will then discuss a recent CAWP project in which he and Robert assisted a local BC company to construct a made-in-Canada low energy home.
3.25pm: Software Innovations to Support Low Energy Building Design
Daniel Depoe from Dietrich's North America demonstrates how modern CAD/CAM software can now be used to calculate building energy requirements.
3.50pm: Creating Custom Window and Doors for High-Performance Architectural Applications
Jim Eisenhower, President of Unison Windows and Doors, will discuss how his company innovates and responds to a diverse range of custom product requests from architects, developers and end users, and describes trends and challenges in the wood window and door subsector.
4.15pm: Marketing your Business using the Internet and Social Media
Iain Macdonald, Managing Director, CAWP, introduces simple, practical tactics for increasing the visibility of your business and driving new, targeted customer inquiries using low-cost web-based tools and applications. This presentation will aim to demystify the world of online search and social media and provide no-nonsense, plain-language advice that will enable wood products manufacturers to exploit new marketing opportunities while avoiding spending hours of non-productive time in cyberspace.
5pm – Light buffet dinner
Evening - 6pm to 9pm
Senior students in the B.Sc. Wood Products Processing program present on what they have been doing for companies during co-op work terms. Lots of networking time to meet the students and explore possible work placements.
